Solo and Group Gameplay in a Star Trek MMORPG +

Having an NPC crew might make some people feel lonely, but not everyone.

Having an NPC crew will make me, for example, feel secure that my gameplay's not going to be interrupted by one of them unexpectedly going AFK for a potty break or supper, or that one of them will go linkdead in the middle of a firefight or a difficult negotiation.

Having an NPC crew will make me feel happy that I'm not expected to change my gaming habits to log on when someone else wants, or to go where someone else wants, or do what someone else wants to do, or to play the game the way someone else prefers to play it.

Of course, if the gameplay is designed such that NPC crew are absolutely hopeless compared to real players, well then, we may all wind up preferring to ship out with other real people.

But it won't be because having an all-NPC crew made us feel lonely.
